The vision engineer in a multicam control room
Why every camera has to match before the director cuts, and who makes sure it does.
The audience sees a cut from a wide shot to a close-up as one continuous picture. The person who makes that possible sits in the control room: the vision engineer.
What the job is
The vision engineer sets exposure, white balance, black level and detail for every camera from a remote control panel (RCP) in the control room. Camera operators concentrate on framing and focus; picture quality is the vision engineer’s responsibility.
Why cameras have to match
Stage lighting changes constantly, and every camera position sees it from a different angle. Without matching, a cut between two cameras shows a jump in colour or brightness that the audience notices immediately.
Where they work
In the control room, in front of production monitors and waveform displays, with one RCP per camera connected to each camera control unit.
